In California, most patients can begin physical therapy without a referral through Direct Access. Some insurance plans may still require a referral for coverage, so our staff will help verify your benefits and let you know before your first visit.
Your first visit includes a detailed evaluation, discussion of your symptoms and goals, and a movement assessment. We will explain what we believe is causing your pain and begin treatment the same day whenever appropriate. You will also leave with guidance on what you can safely do at home.
Please arrive 15 minutes early to your appointment to fill out the required paperwork.
Please bring a photo ID and your insurance card (if you plan to use insurance). If your physician gave you a referral, prescription, or any imaging reports (X-ray, MRI, CT), bring those as well. Wear comfortable clothing that allows us to see and move the area being treated, and bring any braces, supports, or assistive devices you currently use.
Wear comfortable clothing that allows us to see and move the area being treated. For example: shorts for knee or hip problems, and a loose T-shirt or tank top for shoulder or neck issues.
Initial evaluations typically last about 60 minutes. Follow-up visits can range from 45–75 minutes depending on your treatment plan.
Your plan of care is created and directed by a licensed Doctor of Physical Therapy. Depending on your treatment needs, visits may also include care from a physical therapist assistant who works closely with the therapist.
This varies based on your condition, goals, and how long symptoms have been present. After your evaluation, your physical therapist will discuss a recommended plan and expected timeline so you know what to expect.
